Applications of Acrylic Tubes in Lighting Fixtures

Here at JE, we’ve worked on tons of lighting projects through the years, and acrylic tube diffusers are something we use all the time in all kinds of light fixtures. Drawing on our real project experience and on-site engineering work, acrylic tubes are most commonly applied to all types of linear lighting. Today, we’re going to talk in plain terms about what kinds of light fixtures and actual projects are a good fit for acrylic tubes.

First off, let’s start with our regular LED tube housings. That covers T5, T8, T10, T12 tubes, and even heavy-duty rugged work lights. A lot of our customers specifically ask to use acrylic tubes as the light diffuser for these products. The main reason is simple: acrylic tubes have a light transmittance rate of up to 95%. That’s almost as clear as glass, but way more practical. Unlike glass, acrylic won’t shatter easily. It really cuts down on broken product issues during production, packing and shipping, so there’s less loss and fewer headaches for everyone.

Besides standard tubes, all sorts of linear lighting fixtures like under-cabinet lights and wardrobe closet lights also work great with acrylic tube diffusers. If you’ve seen regular PC diffusers, you’ll know they often show visible internal wiring and lines, which ruins the whole look. Switch to acrylic tube diffusers, and you won’t see any messy wiring inside at all. The whole light fixture looks much cleaner, more high-end and sleek, plus it lights up displays and indoor spaces much more evenly and clearly.

We also use acrylic tubes for certain project-specific lights, especially flexible LED neon strips. For these lights, the acrylic tube does two key jobs: it provides solid waterproof protection and keeps the light strip in the perfect shape. You’ll see this kind of setup all the time for building exterior outline lighting, hotel and high-rise facade decorative lights, as well as safety guardrail light tubes for roads and venues.

On top of that, we also use acrylic tubes as diffusers for some special-purpose custom projects. These are lights that need to meet unique functional needs, like germicidal disinfection lamps and fly killer lamps. These special lights give off specific types of light that regular PC material just can’t let through properly. Acrylic tubes fix this problem perfectly, matching the special light transmission requirements these professional lamps need.

Even with all these great benefits, acrylic tubes aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution for every lighting application. They’re not right for every scenario, simply because of the natural properties of acrylic raw material. There are three main situations we always warn customers about. First, if the tubes are left outdoors in direct sunlight for a long time, acrylic will gradually turn yellow over time. Second, high-power LED lights produce a lot of heat, and that excessive heat will cause acrylic tubes to warp and deform easily. Third, they’re not recommended for places prone to frequent bumps and strong impacts, since acrylic is a bit brittle and can crack if hit hard enough.
