How JE Procures PC Raw Materials – A Buyer's Real Experience

2026-06-04 - Leave me a message

Hello everyone, I'm a buyer at JE, and for many years I've been responsible for procuring polycarbonate (PC) raw materials. You might think it's simple, "choose a grade, place an order, and you're done." Actually, it's not. Procuring PC raw materials is an art, requiring skill. Today I'd like to share our professional PC procurement process, the brands we trust, why optical properties are so important to us, and how the performance of the final product changes over time—spoiler alert: if you do your homework, the final product performance will be excellent.

PC Raw Materials

Our Trusted Brands

At JE, we don't risk choosing unknown suppliers. PC is too important to our products. Our preferred brands are SABIC's Lexan and Covestro's Makrolon, and sometimes we choose Teijin or Mitsubishi Engineering Plastics depending on the specific project. These companies have decades of data accumulation, a global supply chain, and reliable technical support; even if you encounter a tricky problem, they will proactively answer your calls.

Why Insist on Using These Materials? Because batch-to-batch consistency is crucial. Using Lexan or Makrolon, we're confident that every batch delivers the same performance—consistent melt flow, transparency, and impact strength. This means our injection molders don't need to readjust machines every time a new bucket arrives. Less waste, less hassle, and an easier time for the production team.

Optical Performance—Why PC is Our Choice

First and foremost, it's important to understand that for transparent parts, PC is often our first choice. Not PMMA, not glass—but PC. Why? Because it combines transparency and toughness. Glass breaks, acrylic cracks on impact, but PC? It remains transparent and intact.

Typical light transmittance for high-transparency PC grades is around 88-90%. While not as high as PMMA's 92%, the difference is virtually imperceptible to the human eye. What really matters is haze and yellowness. Premium PC grades from companies like SABIC or Covestro have extremely low haze—below 1% for optical grades. This means no fogging or distortion. We use it in protective eyewear, machine guards, and even some optical lenses.

Another reason we like it is its refractive index stability. PC's refractive index is stable at around 1.586, so it doesn't interfere with light. If you need a part that won't produce strange rainbow effects or focus shift, PC is ideal. We once made a transparent cover for a medical device that required perfect visual alignment. PC didn't disappoint.

Another huge advantage is that PC can be molded into complex shapes without sacrificing optical quality. You can add reinforcing ribs, bosses, or textured areas while the transparent areas remain transparent.

Usability Stability – A Key We Take Pride In

Now, the real question is: how well do PC components perform in real-world applications over the long term? At JE, we've been tracking product usage for years. I can confidently say that – with the right PC grade and proper processing, its stability is outstanding.

Impact Resistance – This is PC's greatest strength. Unlike some plastics that become brittle after a few months, high-quality PC can maintain its toughness for years. Five years ago, we manufactured a batch of industrial safety shields using Makrolon 2805. These shields are still in use in the factory today, subjected to daily impacts. They haven't developed any cracks or breaks. We even tested one used shield in the lab – its notched Izod impact strength still exceeds 80% of its original value. That's amazing.

Heat Resistance – PC's glass transition temperature is approximately 145-150°C, making it resistant to softening. Some of our outdoor electrical enclosures are exposed to direct sunlight in the summer. Surface temperatures can reach 80–90°C. PC material can withstand such high temperatures without warping or deforming. For three years, we have never received a single complaint about deformation.

Dimensional Stability – PC material has extremely low water absorption (only about 0.15% after 24 hours). This means it will not expand or shrink in humid environments. We once shipped PC parts to a customer in Singapore – where the weather is extremely hot and humid. These parts still fit perfectly with the metal casing. There was no jamming or gaps. It is this reliability that makes customers trust JE.

UV Stability (Choose the Appropriate Grade) – Ordinary PC material does yellow outdoors. However, we never source ordinary PC for outdoor use. We always choose materials with UV stability grades, such as Lexan EXL or Makrolon 2407 with added UV absorbers. These materials perform excellently. We have some outdoor sign lenses that have been exposed to the Florida sun for four years. The surface did become somewhat hazy, but there was no cracking or severe yellowing. This is more than sufficient for most outdoor applications.

Long-Term Mechanical Performance – We conducted a five-year aging study on some PC mounting brackets (indoor use, room temperature, occasional vibration). Five years later, the tensile strength decreased by less than 5%. Elongation at break remained above 100%. The material did not become brittle or fragile. This is what I mean by stability.

Chemical resistance under normal conditions—PC is not resistant to strong solvents, but it performs well in everyday use, such as with oils, greases, and diluted cleaning agents. Our PC parts are used in automotive interiors and come into contact with sweat, coffee stains, and hand cream. No cracks or fissures appeared. Of course, we would advise customers not to use acetone or brake cleaner, but that's common sense.

At JE, we source polycarbonate (PC) because of its durability and reliable performance. Its optical properties are sufficient for 95% of transparent applications. Its long-term stability—impact resistance, heat resistance, dimensional stability, and even UV resistance at the right level—is industry-leading. If handled properly during the molding process, it can satisfy your customers for many years.
