Smoke Testing Standards for LED Track Lighting Fixtures

2025-12-02

This article will explore the smoke testing standards for LED track lighting fixtures around the world.

First, there are UL standards of LED track lighting fixtures. UL has two: UL 1598, which primarily focuses on the safety of the fixtures, including heat resistance and fire resistance testing, and assessing whether all materials burn or produce excessive smoke at high temperatures; and UL 2043, which specifically tests the smoke and flame of heating elements in suspended and recessed lighting fixtures. It's important to note that even the plastic parts of these components must meet this standard.

Second, there are IEC standards of LED track lighting fixtures, two of which are commonly used. IEC 60598-1 requires general safety for the fixtures, including heat resistance and fire resistance testing, and assessing the flame retardancy of insulating and non-metallic materials. The other is the IEC 60695-7 series, which is the standard required for the Chinese market and specifically addresses fire hazard assessment, including smoke opacity testing.

Finally, there is ASTM E84 of LED track lighting fixtures, a standard for testing the combustion of building materials. It primarily evaluates the surface combustion performance of building materials, including the flame spread index and smoke density index. The test can only be used if the material passes the test.
