Why Do Linear Lighting Customers Prefer Striped LED Light Diffusers?

For many years, JE has been dedicated to researching the interaction between light and materials. We have always focused on one key component: LED light diffusers. Through numerous trials by our R&D and production departments, and based on the specific requirements of each project mentioned by our customers, we currently develop and produce three main types of LED light diffusers: transparent LED light diffusers, milky white LED light diffusers, and striped LED light diffusers. These three types of diffusers have different applications, and we can select the most suitable model according to the project requirements.

First, let's look at transparent LED light diffusers. This seemingly simple product actually has the highest requirements for materials. During production, we must ensure the high purity of the raw materials, so that the finished product is completely free of impurities. It achieves almost the same light diffusion effect as glass. However, unlike glass, we add UV-resistant additives during the production of transparent diffusers. Even under continuous high-intensity lighting, this prevents it from yellowing over time. This experience was gained through numerous trials and tests, which is very important in the entire LED light diffuser industry. This type of transparent LED light diffuser has many advantages, such as high light transmittance, low haze, and precise thickness control. However, transparency also presents a problem: individual LED point sources may still be visible. For luminaires with large chip pitch, the "dot" appearance can be distracting. This is where other types of diffusers come in handy.

Secondly, let's look at milky white LED light diffusers. Their biggest advantages are the uniformity of the emitted light and their anti-glare effect. Milky white LED diffusers are the most common choice for almost all indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. This is because they offer numerous advantages. In addition to the two mentioned earlier, they can control transmittance, and because of their milky white color, the LED beads inside the fixture are almost invisible. Directly viewing exposed LED beads can cause glare, leading to eye fatigue and headaches. However, this problem is avoided with milky white LED diffusers. This characteristic also makes them excellent for lighting in surgical or examination procedures. Finally, when the light fixture is turned off, all the internal components are invisible, making the entire fixture very aesthetically pleasing. From a design perspective, this is a significant plus.

Finally, let's look at striped LED light diffusers. Besides stripes, these products also come in prism and columnar patterns, but stripes are the most commonly used in practical applications. Many people don't understand why this design exists; is it redundant, or just for aesthetic purposes? Actually, those who have actually produced and researched them understand perfectly. A transparent striped LED diffuser achieves a unique balance between the efficiency of a transparent diffuser and the uniformity of a milky-white diffuser. Simultaneously, it reduces glare without sacrificing light output. Therefore, for some industrial applications requiring high illuminance but accepting a certain amount of glare, striped diffusers are an excellent choice. Similarly, this is why striped lighting fixtures are generally used in industrial lighting.

According to our ray tracing simulations, a well-designed striped LED diffuser can increase the effective beam angle from 120° to 160° while keeping the peak intensity drop below 10%. Furthermore, this striped pattern enhances mechanical rigidity. The ribs formed by the stripes act as reinforcing ribs, reducing warping of long profiles. Customers in the linear lighting field often prefer this type of diffuser because it allows them to use thinner wall thicknesses without sacrificing structural integrity (thus saving on material costs).
