The last two production steps of plastic extrusion

2023-04-26

Plastic extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process that involves the homogeneous melting of thermoplastic materials. This molten material may be in granular, powdered or granular form. Under sufficient pressure, the molten material separates from the forming die holes. So, how does plastic extrusion work? It can be broken down into four main steps. Today we mainly talk about the next two steps.

Step Three: Form the Mold

On exiting the barrel, the molten material, propelled by the rotating screw, passes through one or more screens present at the end of the barrel. These screens perform two main functions at the same time. First, it removes foreign matter and other contaminants from the molten plastic. Second, it helps ensure that pressure remains constant throughout the system by providing uniform resistance. Thus, as the molten material passes through the screen, it becomes more malleable due to its greatly increased temperature.

The desired shape is obtained by pushing molten plastic through a mold. This means that the mold has to have the shape you want because the shape you get from the molten plastic corresponds to the shape of the mold.

Step 4: Cool

After passing through the mold, the next step is cooling. This can be achieved by using a few cooling rollers or a water shower. The purpose of cooling is to ensure that the shape of the extruded plastic profile does not change.
